WHAT AGE SHOULD I START MY PUPPY IN TRAINING CLASSES?
I start puppies in training classes as soon as they have had all their shots. They are usually about four months of age at that time.
I DO NOT DO "PUPPY" CLASSES, and here is why:
Before your puppy has had all their shots they are very vulnerable, much the same as a human infant.
The first four months of their lives you should be concentrating on three things:
Bonding with the puppy
Socializing the puppy.
House breaking takes a lot of your time. You need to be consistent and patient.
If you need house breaking tips please give me a call, I am happy to help.
Bonding with your puppy is letting him/her know you are the alpha and that you love them and will protect them.
Socializing your puppy needs to be done in a very controlled environment. While they need to meet strangers as well as other dogs and go different places, they also need to be protected. Take them to stores that allow dogs but DO NOT let them on the floor. Put a towel in a cart and put your puppy in the cart. They will get the sights, sounds, and smells of a different place but will be protected. Have your puppy play with other dogs that you know have had all their vaccinations.....maybe a family members dog.
Time goes by very fast and before you know it your puppy will be four months old, had all their shots, and are ready to join in obedience training.
